Obituary

Monique Savlin, Ph.D., nee Lopas, age 79. Beloved wife of the late Robert, loving mother of Peter, Eric, and David (Becky), loving sister of the late Harry, loving sister-in-law of Joyce and Enid. Beloved aunt of Aaron, Matthew, Aaron, Mark, Justin, Jonah, Hannah, many cousins, step-grandmother to Mason. Born in Antwerp, Belgium in 1937 to Celine Hirsch and Aaron Lopas. Happy childhood until Occupation. Then lived with Catholic family in countryside, pretending to be Catholic. Brilliant and loving father, Aaron, was killed by Nazis. After the war, they immigrated to Chicago. Met future husband Robert on a blind date, since he had studied in Belgium. Taught French at Chute Middle School in Evanston, then earned Ph.D. at Northwestern. Was a practicing psychologist for the rest of her life. “I became a psychologist, looking into the mind to find meaning and attempting to understand how people came to behave in the many varied ways which they do. What makes us truly human? How can we be so different from each other? What drive us to commit evil and deny wrongdoing?” Active member of American Academy of Psychotherapists, writer and editor of journal Voices fo 9 years. She loved films, sailing, world travel, reading, writing and especially family. Service, Monday 12 Noon at Ezra- Habonim, The Niles Township Jewish Congregation, 4500 W. Dempster, Skokie. Interment Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center, www.splcenter.org.
